Break of Day is a booklet of personal diary entries written over the span of 8 weeks. This project uses my own daily thoughts and journaling to create written content for each day, along with design elements and manipulated images to feature my daily moods.

This project was both rewarding and relaxing by getting in the habit of writing out my daily thoughts while also learning about myself through the process. My time working on Break of Day allowed me to progress my skills in InDesign by working on typography, image manipulation, brand identity, and illustration.

Break of Day

Writing every day for 8 weeks wasn’t too challenging, but coming up with new ideas and creative design for each page was the challenging part. I wanted the final design to be cohesive and simple, but not too repetitive. By treating each journal entry separately and really focusing on my thoughts and mood for that day, I found more inspiration for image selection and visual hierarchy. After receiving design feedback on initial drafts, I was inspired and motivated to keep each page light and happy.

Process

Break of Day initially started as written journal entries every day over the span of 8 weeks. After completing the writing process, the research phase came into play by researching 100 different book designs and creating a mood board for my book design direction. Once having a clear direction in mind, I started designing my book in InDesign using my journal entries as inspiration for each page’s layout and visual aesthetic. The title “Break of Day” was chosen once I found the journal writing process to be very rewarding and a calming “break” each day from my busy schedule.
